Spiritual Quotient: A Myth or Reality?

Have you heard about human quotients. IQ and EQ are words that everyone is aware of. From childhood we have played various fun games related to IQ. We have also used the term EQ a lot. However, psychologists, neurologists and anthropologists prove that there is a third quotient known as SQ, which is the abbreviation form of spiritual quotient. However, very few are aware of this quotient. Some might find this to be mythical as the sound of the name but there are scientific backups that suggest it to be real. Would you like to know about your own spiritual quotient?

Different types of quotients:

Some quotients are used to define and measure the different dimensions of humans. There are quotients related to physiology, intelligence, emotions, social adaptability and spiritual connectivity

To start with the widely known quotients, Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is the measurement of the individual intelligence level. IQ represents the reasoning ability of judging facts and information along with the logical and analytical power to make decisions.

On the other hand, emotional intelligence (EQ) encompasses empathy, compassion self-awareness and the ability to acknowledge other’s feelings. In essence, EQ is the understanding and controlling ability of one’s own feelings and emotions as well as sensitivity towards others’ feelings.

Now spiritual quotient is what can be easily defined as the combination of IQ and EQ.

What is spiritual quotient?

Spiritual Quotient or SQ refers to a one’s ability to comprehend the meaning of life, capacity to build the vision and value they hold, and understand the elements that make them who they truly are. It is finding a sense of worth in what they do in everyday life aiming for a higher goal. It makes people strive for their dreams and reach higher platforms of satisfaction and contentment.

Stephen Covey, an American educator, author, businessman, and keynote speaker said that, "Spiritual intelligence is the central and most fundamental of all the intelligence, because it becomes the source of guidance for the others." It can be considered to be a supreme ability as it provides higher sense of purpose and realize one’s full potential, builds self-awareness and transforms the overall personality of a person after resetting their thought process.

SQ- why is it important?

In their book Spiritual Intelligence – The Ultimate Intelligence, Danah Zoher and Ian Marshal have explained SQ such that “While computers have IQ and animals can have EQ, it is essentially an SQ that sets human beings apart”. From this statement its clear that SQ is a must characteristic for living a decent life.

Values, Beliefs, Ethics, and Attitudes are important in every aspect of life. From the performance appraisals of the employees to enhanced work conditions provided by employers it holds a significance in successful work life. SQ refers to everyone’s need to develop their full potentialities in whatever field they choose. In the present cruelly materialistic and competitive world it is hard to maintain true individual identity and follow the right sense of direction. The fast pacing modernized world have put so much pressure on all of us due to the technological changes that is has obstructed our moral vision resulting in most of us missing out on the true meaning of life and the essence of our existence. Sadly, suicides cases have been on a rise for quite some time as a lot of people find it difficult to cope up with the current world. Self-reflection is required to attain inner peace after finding purpose of life. Thus, Spiritualism is required not only for our career and career planning, but also with our life and success.
