'A traffic jam is a collision between free enterprise and socialism'

Bangladesh is a most densely populated country in the world. The Traffic Jam is the main and common problem in the country, especially Dhaka and Chittagong district. Dhaka is mega city and Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. More than twelve million people live in Dhaka and the population of Dhaka is increasing rapidly. So, many problems created by its huge population. Every day about seven hundred thousand rickshaws play in road of Dhaka and the huge number of rickshaws is creating a Traffic Jam in the city. Almost all the street is getting jammed by buses, CNG and rickshaws.

I live in Dhaka. My university is only 30 minutes away from my home, but I get out from my house about 1 hour and 15 minutes before the class will start. Because of terrible traffic jam, most of the time it takes about an hour to reach university. I remember a day, it was Friday early morning and there was  no traffic jam on the road, at that day I went to university in just 30 minutes.

Traffic jam has become a regular feature of Dhaka city. Traffic jam obstructed increasing our trade and commerce. If we out from home for office or school, we may face jam and only twenty minutes way may take two hours because of the jam. So that we need more time to reach our destination and we lose our valuable time. The students also face problems to attend their class times. For Traffic jam we cannot complete our tasks on time so our trade and commerce affected. We cannot provide goods and material in due time. We have to spend half of the day on the road if we want to go somewhere in in the city.

Reason Behind the Traffic Jam :

There is a lot of reasons for traffic jam in Dhaka city, such as plying unusable and unfit transports, unskilled drivers, bad and narrow roads, inappropriate traffic system, overtaking tendency of drivers and lack of proper training on traffic system, lack of awareness etc. Another important reason is that manually driven transports run alongside the high-power engine driven ones on all roads with a few exceptions. The number of traffic police is too small to control such a mixed traffic. Millions of man-hours are wasted due to traffic jam on the way.The old part of the city, Magbazar turn, Malibagh and Mouchak turn,Jatrabari area, Mirpur Road, Mirpur area, New Market area, Tejgaon turn, Gabtoli bus stand, Gulistan, Mohakhali and Hatirpool are known to be the most congested areas. In Dhaka city, roads are not wide enough and the existing number of roads is not adequate either. Inadequacy of bus services has encouraged proliferation of rickshaws which is the main reason for traffic jam .Rickshaw pullers are mostly responsible for Traffic jam in the Dhaka city. There are about seven hundred thousand rickshaws are playing on the road of Dhaka city. So the huge rickshaw makes jam and it is one of the most uses vehicle in the city. The narrow roads are also causes Traffic jam because huge vehicle is playing in the road.Illegal parking is another reason for traffic jam

Steps For reducing Traffic Jam:

  • Everyone should follow the Traffic rules.
  • Main roads should be one way and all parking must bend in all roads.
  • People should use zebra cross and foot over bridge while crossing roads and should respect the law.
  • Increase parking facilities for vehicles.
  • Ban rickshaw from the main roads of Dhaka
  • Have a good public transport system so people would get it easily.
  • More Underground Passages and U-Loops
