Standup comedy: A odd way to tell the
sorrow
People from all over the world have
been enjoying comedy as a form of entertainment since the medieval ages. There
are many forms of comedy. Standup comedy is one of them which is more
eye-catching, liberal, and entertaining. But people consider ‘Stand-up’ as a western art form that has
its roots in the stump speech of American monologue to the audience. While
stump speeches intended to mock African-Americans, they also occasionally
contained political and social satire. Also, a big part of standup comedy is making connections with
the audience by saying normal things but in a funny way.
How a comedian writes a set of jokes?
Firstly, the stand-up comedian
chooses a topic and makes a set of jokes.
A stand-up defines their craft through the development of the routine or set.
These are designed through the construction and revision of jokes and
"bits" (linked jokes). The routine emerges from the arrangement of
bits to build an interlinked narrative or overarching theme leading to the
closer (the final joke that ties the themes of the show together in a
satisfying or meaningful conclusion). Political and social issues are the most
common topic of comedians because the audience can easily relate or connect to
the issues. Audiences involve in an unspoken treaty with the comedian in which
they temporarily disregard normal social norms and accept the unexpected
discussion, controversial or scandalous subjects. The ability to understand the
context and appreciate the associated punchline determines whether a joke
results in laughter or disapproval.

Can comedy play a role as a form of
protest?
In our present world, the form of
protest is not fixed. The way of protesting can vary from person to person,
society to society, and country to country. But people used art as a form of
protest in ancient eras. As comedy is a form of art, oftentimes comedians use
it as a form of protesting. In a country that has a law of freedom of speech, where
anybody can say anything to anybody until it’s not hurt any constitutional law
or influence heinous crimes. Also, stand-up comedy can be a form of protest,
when an autocratic government doesn’t give you enough space to tell you against
their bad decision, you can protest against them via comedy or a set of jokes. Political
comedy is a comedy that specializes in gaining entertainment from
politics; it has also been used with subversive intent where political speech
and dissent are forbidden by a regime, as a method of advancing political
arguments where such arguments are expressly forbidden. Benjamin Franklin, who lived from 1706 to 1790, is widely
recognized as America's first political satirist. One of America's Founding
Fathers, he was also an author, newspaper publisher, inventor, scientist, and
politician. He recognized that humor was a powerful vehicle to engage the
public in political issues. As literacy was also a barrier, Franklin pioneered
the use of political cartoons and caricatures as a way to reach the American
public.
How
comedy can shape the nation :
In
a country like ours, we don’t get enough opportunities to tell our sufferings
or life stories. If you are not famous enough people won’t listen to your side
of the story unless it’s entertaining the mass. It’s not a problem of mass,
because in daily life they suffer a lot of issues like high prices of daily
commodities, traffic issues, job issues, and family matters. For these reasons,
they find something entertaining. So, the vacuum this always filled by comedians
or satirists, or tv shows containing a lot of comedy. In the modern world
people, comedians fill this space with their great humor or connectivity with
the audience. Connection with the consumers makes a business successful this
connection to the audience makes a comedians successful in life. In today’s
world comedians like Trevor Noah, and Hasan Minhaj has their tv shows for their
viewers. It shows comedians are not only limited to the theatre or live shows.
They picked various ways to show their talent like OTT content, TV shows, and Radio
specials. Also. Platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO give them enough opportunities.
It’s helping comedian to build their community.

Is
there any dark side to comedy? Of course
Often
comedians choose a topic that a very controversial or taboo in society or they
picked religious issues or social stigma. This type of comedy can be hurting
for anybody, they can feel pressured or bullied, or hackled by the set of
jokes. See in India a lot of comedians faced legal actions or FIRs for their comedy
sets. Though the law enforcement forces were manipulated by the Indian BJP-ruled
governments. The government claim was, as it is hurting someone’s sentiment and
it can fold up in riots or public issues or reason for protest, they are stopping
these comedians. Many times the BJP lead government jailed many comedians saying
they insulted their Hindu Gods by mocking them in their jokes. In Britain, a comedian
like Hasan Minhaj hackled for his Muslim identity and his view against
imperialism. As a citizen of a country, he can have his view. But sometimes government
thinks the comedians are too politically motivated or the campaigner of the opposition
party.

In
the conclusion, comedy can be a way of fun for aged citizens. Comedian tries
their heart and soul to make good sets of comedy. But often time they are
misjudged by the community or the government for their liberal view. Also, some
comedians should apologize for their heckling of the audience in the front row,
though some people enjoy it.
